History
The Mactan Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, was established as a national shrine in 1969 under Republic Act No. 5695 during President Ferdinand Marcos's administration. It commemorates the historic Battle of Mactan, where Lapu-Lapu defeated Ferdinand Magellan's Spanish forces in 1521.
The legislation also led to the erection of the Magellan Monument in 1866 and a bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu in 1981. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) announced plans to improve the shrine in 2019, including a new Lapu-Lapu Shrine design and a competition for a monument. Conservation work was done in preparation for the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations, and the shrine now permanently hoists the Philippine flag since January 17, 2021.[2]
